A 100% natural fiber does not release microfibers into waterways. Hass actively advocates for clean water through high-engagement activities and our materials hold certifications that address water consumption and treatment. We've also performed a life cycle analysis on this material to understand its impacts.
Certified organic cotton can biodegrade in as few as five months. Hass sources a more responsible material versus conventional, cheaper options. The material holds GOTS and MADE SAFE certifications and we actively advocate for safe material legislation.
The Hass supply chain is certified according to a standard that addresses workers' rights. We have diverse leadership representation (36% female, 60% ethnic variance), and the finished product assembly (cut and sew) is local to the headquarters. Our B Corp score ranks 6.4 out of 8.83 points.
Hass is actively pursuing its Zero Waste Certification. We have invested in capital purchases to reduce single-use plastic consumption and implemented a donation program that results in 90%+ donation rates of returned products. Select materials are certified according to recycled standards.
Supporting Brave Trails and LGBTQ+ Youth
Brave Trails is a national non-profit building the next generation of LGBTQ+ leaders. Through summer camps, family camps, mentorship programs, and year-round leadership programming, Brave Trails helps LGTBQ+ youth thrive. “Nothing makes us more proud than seeing our youth take the skills they gain in our programs and use them to create meaningful change in their communities,” says the organization. Through our membership with 1% For the Planet, we’ll donate 100% of profits of our Natural As Love T-shirt to this awesome organization.
Why Organic Cotton Matters
Conventional cotton is one of the dirtiest crops on the planet, heavily reliant on pesticides and excessive water use. It has an enormous carbon footprint. The toxic chemicals used to grow it are linked to higher rates of cancer, asthma, and birth defects where the crop is grown. Farmers grow GOTS organic certified cotton without pesticides. It has about half the carbon footprint of conventional cotton. It uses around 70 percent less water. GOTS also validates fair and ethical treatment for the farmers, which results in safer, more sustainable communities.
Proudly Sewn In LA
More than 95 percent of clothing is imported from overseas. Often, the clothes are made in factories with devastating environmental impacts and terrible human rights violations, including forced child labor. Intensive carbon emissions from transporting garments overseas increase the greenhouse gasses that lead to the climate crisis. That’s why we cut, dye, and sew our Natural As Love Tee with the best internationally-sourced cotton. The Global Organic Textile Standard has thoroughly vetted our factory partners to ensure we’re meeting the highest standards of social and environmental responsibility.
Sustainable Fashion Is Better For the Planet
Fast fashion accounts for 10 percent of all carbon emissions. The industry is the second-largest consumer of water — it takes 700 gallons to produce one non-organic cotton shirt. Toxic textile dyes are the second-largest polluter of water. Meanwhile, 85 percent of all textiles end up in landfills each year, and synthetic clothing made from petroleum byproducts, like polyester and nylon, will never decompose. Our materials — like 100% certified organic cotton — are entirely sustainable. Natural and organic materials use less water and are not petroleum byproducts. They biodegrade and can be processed in a way that is safe for people and the planet.
Climate Neutral Certified
Carbon emissions are the leading cause of the climate crisis. Hass is one of 27 clothing companies that is Climate Neutral Certified, effectively making our business carbon neutral. We work with Climate Neutral to reduce our emissions, then we measure and voluntarily offset more than 100% of our footprint, from resource extraction to shipping, by supporting carbon offset projects through the Bonneville Environmental Foundation. Our offset projects help mitigate climate change and support innovation in addressing greenhouse gas emissions reductions.
Created by Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard, 1% for the Planet is a global organization that connects sustainably-minded businesses like Hass to environmental nonprofits. As members, we donate 1 percent of our annual revenues to verified organizations that address the interrelated issues of climate change, healthy food systems, land management, water resources, pollution, and wildlife diversity.
Certified B Corporations are a new kind of business that balance purpose and profit — they legally commit to consider the impacts of their decisions on their workers, customers, suppliers, community, and the environment. It’s a community of leaders, driving a global movement of people using business as a force for good. Reed + Gwen, as a subsidiary of Avocado Green Brands, has a B Score of 126.2 points — well beyond the 80-point minimum threshold.
The emissions from burning fossil fuels are the leading cause of our unprecedented climate crisis. Hass is proud to be Climate Neutral Certified for net zero emissions. We work with the nonprofit to voluntarily measure, reduce, and offset more than 100% of our scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions by supporting carbon offset initiatives through the Bonneville Environmental Foundation.
Organic fabrics are better for you, better for farmers, and better for the planet. And we’re proud to use cotton and wool that’s certified organic by the Global Organic Textile Standard (CU863637) — the gold standard for organic fabrics. GOTS verifies these fabrics are free from harmful chemicals and meet the highest standards for social and environmental responsibility.
